Artist Interview

What is your studio environment like?

The studio environment for me is always kept in a specific rhythm just like a microcosmos. Each time when I settle into a new space, firstly I locate the tools in a way that I can easily use them without delay. My process does not require much space but the arrangement and the order of the space are crucial. Along with the physical studio, the digital space also plays a big part as a second studio for me. I get inspiration mainly from the photographic images which include the photos taken by myself and also the ones found online.

Could you briefly discuss the stories behind the creation of this body of work?

The paintings share the theme of the gap between the individuals. ‘We made it’ series came from a scene of a child and their parent walking alongside each other. The images suggest the possible ways of making eye contact with another being who is always in the distance. On the other hand, ‘Slash’ deals with the gap caused by violence which results in the distance between the two beings. The three images are about the resistance and the attraction between multiple beings that share the same space.

If you stand in front of a mirror, what would you like to see through it?

I would always hope to look straight into my eyes, never looking away, at the same time not forgetting to leave space to look what is there next to myself.
